10 FACTS ABOUT INSULIN SENSITIZERS (Thiazolidinedione)
- Insulin Sensitizers decrease blood sugar by decreasing insulin resistance
- Rezulin is no longer available
- Avandia and Actos have been on the market for about a year
- Rezulin was taken off the market because it was associated with a
small number of cases of liver failure
- Studies have not shown any liver problems with Avandia and Actos
- If you start taking Avandia or Actos you may be able to decrease your
insulin dose
- With Avandia and Actos, liver function is checked every 2 months for
the first year and every 3-4 months thereafter
-
It may take 1-2 weeks before you see any change in
initial blood glucose levels. It can take 3 months before the full
effect of the drug is seen
Studies have not shown any liver problems
with Avandia or Actos
- The most commonly reported side effect is swelling of the feet and
hands, this only occurs in a small percentage of patients
- If you have congestive heart failure or liver problems, you may not
be able to take this drug
GOOD BYE AND WELCOME
EDA would like to say “Good-Bye” to Julie Francis and “Welcome” to Lisa
Everhart. Julie had a baby boy in June and will be staying home. We are
glad to have Lisa as our new Nurse Practitioner/ Diabetes Educator.
Julie says, “Thank you to all of my terrific patients. I will miss you!
You are in great hands with Lisa. It should be an easy transition. I will
send in a picture of our baby, so check out the bulletin board next time
you are here. Keep striving for those A1C’s between 6-7% and don’t over
treat your “lows”. Take care.”
Lisa adds, “ I am excited to be a part of EDA and look forward to getting
to know all of you. In the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to
work with Julie, who has taught me many tricks and pearls. She is a tough
act to follow! Please feel free to call me any time with questions or
concerns.”
